How to Load and Lock Your eBike Like a Pro

07/15/2025 by Ravi

Load and Lock your eBike

Let’s Ride: How to Load and Lock Your eBike Like a Pro

Because the adventure starts the second you hitch up.

There’s nothing quite like the feeling of rolling out on an eBike adventure- fresh air, dusty trails, and the open road ahead. But before you hit the gas, let’s make sure your eBike is locked down tight and ready for the journey. Whether you’re road-tripping to the mountains or cruising to your favorite local loop, this guide will help you load your rig safely, quickly, and without the drama. Read on as we break down how to load your eBike and explore how the MoTow can make transporting your eBike easier than ever.

Step 1: Pick a Rack That Can Keep Up

The last thing you want? A rickety rack that can’t handle the weight. eBikes are heavy, and that calls for serious gear. Enter the MoTow eBike Rack: U.S.-made, stainless steel tough, and engineered for convenience. It supports even the heaviest setups without breaking a sweat (or your bumper).

Step 2: Prep Your eBike

Pop off the battery, ditch any panniers or loose gear, and check your tires. Stripping down your bike not only lightens the load but also protects your gear from damage during transport.

Step 3: Load Like a Legend

Just lift one wheel at a time (front first) and place it securely in the rack tray. Work smarter, not harder. MoTow’s low-profile design makes loading way easier than those high-lift setups. Add a MoTow Hitch Lift for even easier loading, especially when you’re handling heavy eBikes or flying solo.

Step 4: Lock It Down

Use the rack’s integrated arms or straps to anchor the frame and wheels, and give everything a good shake before heading out. No wobbles, no worries. Bonus points for throwing on an extra locking hitch pin for added security.

Step 5: Road-Ready Check

Confirm your hitch is secure, your taillights are visible, and your ride is rock-solid. Then cue up your playlist, crack the windows, and roll out with confidence.

Why MoTow’s Got Your Back

The MoTow eBike Rack isn’t just tough, it’s trail-tested by riders who live for the journey. Built from corrosion-resistant stainless steel in the USA, it’s designed for maximum strength and minimum hassle. With easy loading, secure locking, and a tilt feature for fast trunk access, it turns “transportation” into part of the adventure.

The Ultimate eBike Trail Etiquette Guide

Trail etiquette

Ride Right: The Ultimate eBike Trail Etiquette Guide

Because good vibes (and good trails) start with respect.

The trails are calling and more eBikes than ever are answering. As access grows, so does the need for riding with respect. Whether you’re grinding gravel in the mountains or cruising a peaceful rail-trail, good trail manners help protect the land, the vibe, and the ride. Here’s how to be the rider everyone wants to share the path with and where MoTow fits in.

1. Yield Like a Pro

Trail rule #1: Be cool, be courteous. Yield to hikers and horses, give uphill riders the right of way, and call out with a friendly “on your left” before passing. A quick bell ring doesn’t just sound good, it sets the tone.

2. Roll Lightly Through Nature

Nature is your playground, treat it like a friend’s house. Slow down for wildlife, skip the loud playlists, and always ride through puddles (not around them) to avoid trail damage. Every smart move helps preserve access for the next rider.

3. Respect the Flow

eBikes pack speed and power, so use them wisely. On busy paths, match your speed to the crowd. Pass wide and smooth, and stay single file when others are around. You’ll keep the trail karma high and avoid any “whoa, too fast!” moments.

4. Be Trail-Ready

Trail etiquette starts with being prepared. Bring water, tools, and a charged-up battery. Give your brakes and tires a once-over before every ride. And when it comes to getting to the trailhead, having solid gear makes all the difference

MoTow Gets You There Without the Fuss

The MoTow eBike Rack is the MVP of trail days, built in the USA from corrosion-resistant stainless steel and ready to haul even your heaviest eBike without wobble or drama. Its easy-load platform and secure fit mean you spend less time fiddling and more time riding. Wherever you’re headed, MoTow makes arrival feel like the best part of the trip.

Respect the trail. Ride with heart. Let MoTow take you there.

Adventure doesn’t wait for the popular trails—and neither should you.

A new kind of freedom unfolding across America’s trail systems: full-throttle eBike access. As trail policy evolves, riders finally gain ground on paths that once felt out of reach. If you’re looking to ditch the crowds and level up your adventure, here are five underrated destinations now open to all classes of eBikes, each one begging for your next ride.

Think: alpine views, echoing tunnels, and towering trestles. This former rail line spans 15 miles of unforgettable scenery through the Bitterroots. It’s a smooth, scenic descent that Class 1 riders will love, though many locals roll through confidently on Class 2s and 3s, too.

2. South Mountain Park – Phoenix, AZ

What happens when 70+ miles of rugged desert terrain meet full eBike access? Pure trail bliss. South Mountain’s diverse loops like Desert Classic and National, deliver heart-pounding climbs, scenic ridgelines, and a taste of the wild just minutes from downtown.

3. Ocala National Forest – Florida

Don’t let Florida’s flatlands fool you, Ocala’s OHV trails are a sandy, pine-scented playground open to all eBike classes. With 200+ miles to explore and plenty of wildlife, it’s a deep-cut gem that rewards the curious rider.

4. Mammoth Mountain Bike Park – California

Summer at elevation hits differently. When the snow melts, Mammoth becomes a gravity-fed dreamland for eBike riders. Class 1 access is officially sanctioned, and many nearby trails welcome the extra juice of Class 2 and 3 motors. Just pack layers—alpine weather plays by its own rules.

5. St. Joe State Park – Missouri

New Policy Grants E-Bikes Trail Access in Michigan

Freedom on Two Wheels: New Policy Grants E-Bikes Trail Access in Michigan

Michigan has long been a haven for outdoor enthusiasts, with its vast network of trails offering breathtaking views and diverse terrain. However, for years, electric bike riders faced significant restrictions on where they could ride. Recent e-Bike Trail Policy changes are rewriting the rules, opening up thousands of miles of trails to eBikes and making outdoor recreation more inclusive and accessible than ever.

A Brief History of eBike Restrictions in Michigan

Historically, eBikes were treated with caution in Michigan due to concerns about their motorized nature and potential impact on non-motorized trail users. Before 2017, there was little clarity on where eBikes could be used, leading to inconsistent rules across the state. This changed with the passage of Public Act 138 in 2017, which introduced a clear classification system for eBikes, dividing them into three classes. See our article on Everything you need to know about e-Bike classes for more details.

While this legislation provided a framework, it also imposed restrictions. Class 3 eBikes were generally prohibited from multi-use trails unless local ordinances allowed them, and even Class 1 and 2 eBikes faced limitations on certain natural-surface trails.

What’s Changing Now?

In August 2024, Michigan’s Department of Natural Resources (DNR) approved a landmark Land Use Order expanding eBike access on state-managed trails. Under the new rules:

Class 1 eBikes are now allowed on improved-surface trails, linear trails (paved or gravel/asphalt), and natural-surface non-motorized trails in state parks, recreation areas, and state forest pathways. Class 2 eBikes are permitted on many of the same trails as Class 1, provided they meet local regulations. Class 3 eBikes remain restricted from most non-motorized trails but can be used on roads and pathways where traditional bicycles are allowed.

These changes reflect a growing recognition of eBikes as a sustainable and inclusive mode of transportation, balancing the needs of riders with environmental and safety considerations.

Why this Matters

The expanded access allows individuals with mobility challenges, older adults, and less By encouraging eBike use, Michigan is reducing reliance on cars for trail access, helping to lower carbon emissions and protect natural habitats. Experienced riders to enjoy Michigan’s trails, fostering a more inclusive outdoor community. The policy update is expected to boost local economies and increase demand for eBike rentals, sales, and related services.

The Future of Trail Riding in Michigan

This e-Bike Trail Policy update marks a significant step forward for outdoor recreation in Michigan. By embracing eBikes, the state is not only expanding access to its natural treasures but also setting an example for sustainable and inclusive trail management. So, charge up your eBike, pack your gear, and get ready to experience Michigan’s trails like never before! Check out the best eBike Trails in Michigan.

Class 1, 2, & 3 eBikes: Everything You Need to Know

04/09/2025 by Ravi

eBikes 101

eBike 101: Everything You Need to Know About Class 1, 2, & 3

Class 1, Class 2, and Class 3 eBike classifications aren’t just technical jargon, they play a key role in defining the features, speed limits, and best use cases for each type of eBike. Understanding what sets them apart can help you choose the perfect ride for your lifestyle. Read on as we break down these classes and explore how the MoTow eBike Carrier can make transporting your eBike easier than ever.

Class 1: Convenient and Beginner-Friendly

Class 1 eBikes are the ultimate all-rounder, perfect for riders just dipping their toes into the electric biking world. With pedal-assist functionality and no throttle, the motor kicks in only when you pedal, giving you that extra push while keeping you engaged. These bikes max out at 20 mph, making them ideal for casual riders, commuters, and anyone looking for a low-maintenance yet eco-friendly way to travel. Plus, their ability to cruise on most bike paths and trails makes them a top pick for urban explorers and nature lovers alike. Affordable and approachable, Class 1 eBikes are often the gateway to discovering just how fun and practical electric biking can be.

Weighing between 35 to 60 pounds, Class 1 eBikes are often lightweight and easy to handle. This makes them a breeze to maneuver through city streets or haul up a flight of stairs, especially for urban commuters.

Class 2: Effortless and Versatile

Looking for a bit more versatility? Class 2 eBikes combine pedal-assist and a throttle, giving you the freedom to ride on your terms. Whether you’re tackling tough hills, navigating a busy city, or just taking a break from pedaling, the throttle is your best friend. Like Class 1, these bikes also max out at 20 mph, but the added throttle makes them a go-to for riders seeking convenience without sacrificing speed. They’re a lifesaver for daily commuters, adventure-seekers, or anyone looking for a ride that adapts to their needs.

With a weight range of 50 to 70 pounds, these bikes pack a bit more heft, which reflects their powerful motors and robust batteries. But that extra weight is well worth it for the added functionality and comfort they provide.

Class 3: High-Speed and Performance-Oriented

For thrill-seekers and seasoned riders, Class 3 eBikes are all about speed and performance. With a maximum assisted speed of 28 mph, these bikes are built to get you places fast, making a speedometer required. Whether you’re conquering long commutes or breezing through roadways, Class 3 eBikes offer a dynamic, exhilarating experience. They’re a favorite among advanced riders and long-distance travelers who value efficiency and performance. While their speed may limit their access to certain bike paths or trails, they’re a dream come true for urban commutes or long road rides where cutting down travel time is key.

Designed to be durable and performance-driven, Class 3 eBikes typically weigh 60 to 80 pounds. Their sturdy construction ensures they’re up to the task of handling faster speeds and longer distances with ease.

Which Class is Right for You?

Choosing the right eBike is all about your goals. If you’re just getting started or value simplicity, Class 1 is a fantastic choice. For those who crave flexibility and a more relaxed ride, Class 2 offers the perfect balance of pedal-assist and throttle. If speed and performance are your top priorities, Class 3 delivers an unmatched, high-powered experience. Whichever class you choose, there’s an electric bike out there to fit your lifestyle. Read this article to see which eBike of each Class is the best for you!

Why Motow Hitch eBike Racks get a Stamp of Approval from RV Owners

04/06/2025 by Ravi

Ebike on an RV

Bring your ebike along on your RV travels with our Hitch eBike Rack

Bringing your ebike along on your RV travels can help save you money and provide health benefits. Imagine the possibilities of using your bike to run an errand, enjoying a leisurely ride in the country air, or using a bike path to enter into a city. The most challenging part can be finding a place to store and carry your ebike safely while traveling. It’s important to know which is the right choice when considering an RV hitch eBike rack. With the popularity of eBikes (Electric bicycles) making their way into the RV community, transporting eBikes has now created a new challenge for RVers.

Things to consider when transporting a bike

  1. Weight of the bike(s). Keep in mind that eBikes weigh significantly more.
  2. Mounting on the back of your RV or tow vehicle will have different effects due to the tail whip of your RV or Tow vehicle.
  3. Know your tow capacity. Some RV trailers and 5th wheels do not allow weights over 300lbs on their hitch. Keep in mind of total cargo carrying capacity of your RV.
  4. Lifting your eBike can be challenging.
  5. Bike racks are rated to carry the cumulative weight of bikes and the rack, so remember to find the total weight of both when shopping for a bike rack

RV bike rack

An RV bike rack is exclusive for an RV which is different from a standard motorized vehicle. Racks are made for RVs based on size and shape of the rig, added stability and shock absorption to keep bikes in place. One type of mount is a hitch mount eBike rack, which is the most popular style. Rear hitches can create a tail whip effect due the the rear end of rigs being so far from the tires. Remember the days sitting in the back of a bus going over bumps? Imagine what your bikes go through in the rear end of your rig.

Standard bike rack

This is your everyday, run-of-the-mill bike rack that you have (most likely) seen all your life and throughout your travels. Excluding a small minority of Racks, these DO NOT include an accessory/feature that is designed to reduce the “shock” your bikes will experience behind your RV.

RV approved bike rack

If mounting bikes on a rack on the back of your RV, you want to make sure it is RV approved. An “RV-approved” bike rack is specifically designed to reduce the energy transferred from the road to the bikes on the back of the RV, which can be very different from other vehicles. RV-approved bike racks are designed with specific size, weight, and shape considerations, and have increased stability features to keep your bikes from bouncing and shaking. The vibrations and movement, if not stabilized, can damage the bikes and even break a traditional car bike rack. MoTow provides a Hitch Stabilizer with every eBike Carrier and has been independently tested for usage on RV’s. Watch our Hitch eBike Rack being tested:

Now that you know the difference you can shop more confidently and understand what you need for your specific setup.

Which gives the better thrill, an e-bike or a motorcycle?

03/27/2025 by Motow

ebike and motorcycle in the mountains

5 key differences between e-bikes and motorcycles

MoTow has met a lot of passionate e-bike and motorcycle enthusiasts over the years. Each person has their own amazing experiences and stories to tell about the fun they’ve had on their bikes; from taking that cross-country road trip with their motorcycle in tow to racing through NYC on a group ride with other power e-bikers, to unforgettable national park visits e-biking with grandkids. The thrill of riding an e-bike versus a motorcycle comes down to personal comfort with power, speed, and control.

Here’s how people think they compare:

1. Acceleration & Power

  • E-Bikes typically have a smoother, more controlled acceleration. Even high-powered e-bikes like the Surron have instant torque, but lack the raw, aggressive power of a motorcycle.
  • Motorcycles feel more intense with a deep engine growl and significantly higher acceleration. The sensation of twisting the throttle on a 600cc+ bike delivers an adrenaline rush that e-bikes can’t match.

2. Speed & Handling

  • E-Bike speed varies by class (Class 1-3 or off-road models), but even the fastest street-legal e-bikes max out around 28–50 mph. Handling is lighter and more agile due to less weight.
  • Motorcycle’s high-speed capability (100+ mph) and heavier weight make for a more planted and aggressive ride, especially on highways.

3. Vibration & Sound

  • E-Bikes offer a whisper-quiet ride with no engine vibration. This creates a more serene experience that allows you to hear the world around you as you ride.
  • Gas powered motorcycles have an unmistakable sound and vibration from the engine that add to the sensory excitement, making every ride feel powerful and immersive.

4. Riding Experience & Thrill

  • E-Bikes feel more effortless and nimble in an urban setting. The ability to pedal and ride silently makes it feel like a mix of cycling and motorized riding.
  • Motorcycles are more intense, requiring greater skill, focus, and commitment. Leaning into corners, rev-matching, and hearing the exhaust note add to the thrill.

5. Accessibility & Risk

  • E-Bikes are easier to ride, with no license required (for most), and lower risk overall. The thrill is more about agility and convenience.
  • Motorcycles have higher risk but also a greater sense of mastery and freedom. The risk factor itself contributes to the thrill.

If you love high-speed adrenaline and mechanical feedback, a motorcycle is unmatched. But if you enjoy a more nimble, quiet, and futuristic ride, an e-bike offers a different kind of fun. One that may be more in tune with, and allow you to hear more of, the sounds of nature as you go.

MoTow makes it easy to go wherever your heart and your favorite bikes take you. Check out our all-stainless steel e-bike carriers and motorcycle tow hitches at motowus.com.

8 Reasons Why Aluminum Can’t Compete With Steel Bike Racks

03/05/2025 by Ravi

Steel e-bike racks out-perform aluminum

Why Our Steel Bike Racks Out-perform Aluminum

With so many aluminum e-bike carriers on the market, you might wonder, “Are steel bike racks better or worse than aluminum?”. Stainless steel e-Bike carriers have several advantages over aluminum e-Bike carriers, making them a much better choice in many important situations.

1. Strength & Durability

Stainless steel is significantly stronger than aluminum, allowing it to handle heavier eBikes with less risk of bending or failure. This is particularly important for high-capacity bike racks.

2. Corrosion Resistance

While both materials resist rust, stainless steel is more resistant to corrosion, especially in coastal or high-moisture environments where aluminum may oxidize and weaken over time.

3. Longevity

Due to its strength and resistance to environmental damage, stainless steel carriers tend to last longer than aluminum ones, reducing the need for replacement or repairs on your eBike rack. Learn more about the differences between steel and aluminum in this article: Aluminum vs. Stainless Steel: A Comprehensive Comparison for Metal Fabrication.

4. Weight Capacity

Stainless steel bike racks can support more weight than aluminum racks, making it ideal for carrying multiple or heavier e-bikes safely without flexing or sagging.

5. Less Flex & Better Stability

Aluminum bicycle carriers may flex under heavy loads, leading to instability while driving. Stainless steel remains rigid, providing a more secure and stable rack for the e-bikes.

6. Weld Strength & Durability

Stainless steel welds are generally stronger and more durable than aluminum welds, which can weaken over time due to fatigue and stress. The stronger the connection between pieces of the eBike rack, the more secure your eBikes and bicycles are.

7. Security

The added rigidity and strength of stainless steel make it harder for thieves to cut through the bike rack compared to an aluminum one, enhancing bike security.

8. Heat Resistance

Stainless steel handles high temperatures better than aluminum, reducing the risk of weakening in extreme heat conditions.

Conclusion – Steel Bike Racks Come out on Top

Aluminum carriers do have some advantages, such as being lighter and more affordable, but for maximum durability, weight capacity, and stability, stainless steel is the superior option.

Fortunately for you, MoTow product engineers have mastered a minimalist stainless steel design that uses strong, permanent welds, not fasteners, bolts and nuts, to produce a lightweight and ready-to-use eBike rack. At 27 pounds, the MoTow eBike Carrier is the lightest and strongest e-bike carrier in its class.

And of course, all MoTow e-Bike Carriers, Hitch Lifts and Motorcycle Tow Hitches are made 100% from 304 stainless steel. We know what long, bumpy rides are in store for you and your bikes, so we will continue to make the strongest, lightest, most durable carriers in the world.
